Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Centre for Human Excellence and Social Sciences
Mamata Banerjee
Today we have laid the foundation stone of Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Centre for Human Excellence and Social Sciences – Vivek Tirtha at New Town, Rajarhat.
On the occasion of 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Vivekananda at Belur Math last year, I had requested the Math to do something to help our youth in character building and human excellence.
We are indeed happy as they have agreed to set up this Centre of Excellence. We have allotted 5 acres of land. The Central Building of Vivek Tirtha will be modelled along the lines of Chicago Art Institute where Vivekananda delivered his historic address.
The Centre aims to become one of the premier centres in the world for imparting cutting edge programmes in value orientation, personality development, communication skills, mind management and other attributes to the youth of our country and the world.Centre for Human Excellence and Social Sciences – Vivek Tirtha at New Town, Rajarhat.

The festival is principally celebrated by offerings of Bael (Bilva) leaves to the Lord Shiva, all day fasting and an all night long vigil. Per scriptural and discipleship traditions, the penances are performed in order to gain boons in the practice of Yoga and meditation, in order to reach life’s summum bonum steadily and swiftly. Dakshineswar Ramkrishna Sangha Adyapeath – In 1915, a young Brahmin named Annada Charan Bhattacharya was setting up a successful practice in Ayurvedic medicine in Calcutta. A capable scientist, he had discovered seven patent medicines and went on to become a renowned doctor all over Bengal.
Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa (Bangla: রামকৃষ্ণ পরমহংস Ramkṛiṣṇo Pôromôhongśo) (February 18, 1836 – August 16, 1886), born Gadadhar Chattopadhyay (Bangla: গদাধর চট্টোপাধ্যায় Gôdadhor Chôţţopaddhae), was a famous mystic of 19th-century India. His religious school of thought led to the formation of the Ramakrishna Mission by his chief disciple Swami Vivekananda – both were influential figures in the Bengali Renaissance as well as the Hindu renaissance during the 19th and 20th centuries. Many of his disciples and devotees believe he was an avatar or incarnation of God. Ramakrishna was born in a poor Brahmin Vaishnava family in rural Bengal. He became a priest of the Dakshineswar Kali Temple, dedicated to the goddess Kali, which had the influence of the main strands of Bengali bhakti tradition. Read More: > HERE <
Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission are twin organizations which form the core of a worldwide spiritual movement (known as Ramakrishna Movement or Vedanta Movement), which aims at the harmony of religions, harmony of the East and the West, harmony of the ancient and the modern, spiritual fulfillment, all-round development of human faculties, social equality, and peace for all humanity, without any distinctions of creed, caste, race or nationality.
RAMAKRISHNA MATH is a monastic organization for men brought into existence by Sri Ramakrishna (1836-1886), the great 19th century saint of Bengal who is regarded as the Prophet of the Modern Age.
RAMAKRISHNA MISSION is a registered society in which monks of Ramakrishna Math and lay devotees cooperate in conducting various types of social service mainly in India. It was founded by Sri Ramakrishna chief apostle, > SWAMI VIVEKANANDA (vedanta, jnana yoga )< (1863-1902), one of the foremost thinkers and religious leaders of the present age, who is regarded as ‚one of the main moulders of the modern world‘, in the words of an eminent Western scholar A. L. Basham.
The ideology of Ramakrishna Math and Mission consists of the eternal principles of Vedanta as lived and experienced by Sri Ramakrishna and expounded by Swami Vivekananda. This ideology has three characteristics: it is modern in the sense that the ancient principles of Vedanta have been expressed in the modern idiom; it is universal, that is, it is meant for the whole humanity; it is practical in the sense that its principles can be applied in day-to-day life to solve the problems of life.
The motto of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission is: Atmano mokshartham jagad hitaya cha, „For one’s own salvation, and for the welfare of the world“. The main goals and objectives of these twin organizations, based on the principles of Practical Vedanta, are:
- To spread the idea of the potential divinity of every being and how to manifest it through every action and thought.
- To spread the idea of harmony of religions based on Sri Ramakrishna’s experience that all religions lead to the realization of the same Reality known by different names in different religions. The Mission honours and reveres the founders of all world religions such as Buddha, Christ and Mohammed.
- To treat all work as worship, and service to man as service to God.
- To make all possible attempts to alleviate human suffering by spreading education, rendering medical service, extending help to villagers through rural development centres, etc.
- To work for the all-round welfare of humanity, especially for the uplift of the poor and the downtrodden.
- To develop harmonious personalities by the combined practice of Jnana, Bhakti, Yoga and Karma.
Sarada Devi (Bengali: সারদা দেবী) (1853—1920), born Saradamani Mukhopadhyaya, was the wife and spiritual counterpart of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, a nineteenth century mystic of Bengal. Sarada Devi is also reverentially addressed as the Holy Mother (Sri Maa) by the followers of the Ramakrishna monastic order. Sarada Devi played an important role in the growth of the Ramakrishna Movement. Read More: > HERE <
Endearingly known as ‘Holy Mother’, Sri Sarada Devi, the spiritual consort of Sri Ramakrishna, was born on 22 December 1853 in a poor Brahmin family in Jayrambati, a village adjoining Kamarpukur in West Bengal. Her father, Ramachandra Mukhopadhyay, was a pious and kind-hearted person, and her mother, Shyama Sundari Devi, was a loving and hard-working woman.

News Release: #Malaysian Govt censored a film implicating officials in trafficking Rohingya girls | @FortifyRights https://t.co/Hojj5urQUc
— Matthew Smith (@matthewfsmith) 16. August 2017
In the uncensored version of the documentary, a human trafficker is filmed explaining that passports of potential child brides are forged in Bangladesh and that “the trafficker will [then] pay money to clear [Malaysian] immigration.” In another scene that was subsequently censored, the Rohingya-refugee husband of a trafficked child-bride explains that Malaysian police routinely extort money from him during his daily commute to work, saying, “I pay the police 10 to 20 Ringgit all the time.”
The authorities also cut a scene from “Bou” showing Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak walking with other Government Ministers. The authorities verbally explained to Ms. Ramakrishnan that Prime Minister Najib had nothing to do with the subject of the film. Officials also verbally informed Ms. Ramakrishnan to cut an additional scene showing Ganesha, the Hindu elephant god.

Ramkrishna Mission Nivedita Educational and Cultural Centre
“Roy Villa” – Darjeeling (3 photos)
A historic agreement has been signed today amongst Government of West Bengal, GTA and Ram Krishna Mission regarding “Roy Villa” in Darjeeling, in presence of Swami Suhitanandaji, General Secretary, Ramkrishna Mission and Shri Bimal Gurung, Chief Executive, GTA.
Sister Nivedita used to live at ‘Roy Villa’ and breathed her last in 1911. Since then, it has been a 102-year old heritage landmark in Darjeeling.
It has been agreed that GTA would hand over the premises to the State Government for setting up of a Centre of Excellence in the name of “Ramkrishna Mission Nivedita Educational and Cultural Centre”. The Centre would be run by the Ram Krishna Mission and skill development and capacity building trainings for employment will be imparted to the youth.
We have announced a grant of Rs. One Crore for renovation of “Roy Villa”.
The State Government has also agreed to hand over the Tenzing Norgay Youth Hostel to the GTA. A grant of Rs. One Crore would be given for renovation of the youth hostel.
I am uploading three pictures of today’s event for all of you to see.

Sister Nivedita’s house at Baghbazar was long under occupation of others. On 11th January this year, on the occassion of handing over of Swami Vivekananda’s ancestral home to Ramkrishna Mission, I had announced that we would also acquire Sister Nivedita’s house and hand it over for upkeep in a befitting manner.
My brothers and sisters would be happy to know that within this very short time, our government completed the acquisition and today, we handed it over to Ramkrishna Sarada Mission. This is indeed a big accomplishment and our humble contribution to preserve the glorious heritage of our country and pay homage to our great leaders and visionaries.

Sri Sri Kali Puja : 13 November (LIVE)
Kali Puja (Bengali: কালীপূজা) or Shyama Puja (Bengali: শ্যামাপূজা) or Mahanisha Puja as it is known in Mithila ,Bengal, [1] is a festival dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali, celebrated on the new moon day of the Hindu month Ashwin in Bengal.[2] It coincides with the pan-Indian Lakshmi Puja day of Diwali. While the Bengalis other than ghotis of West Bengal,Oriyas and Assamese adore goddess Kali[2] on this day the rest of India and also the pashchim bangiyas known as ghotis of West Bengal worships goddess Lakshmi on Diwali.Maithili people worship both Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Kali on this day.
Although the widely popular annual Kali Puja celebration, also known as the Dipanwita Kali Puja, is celebrated on the new moon day of Aswin, Kali is also worshipped in other new moon days too. Two other major Kali Puja observations are Ratanti Kali Puja and Phalaharini Kali Puja, respectively celebrated on the new moon days of the Hindu months of Margashirsha and Jyeshta. The Phalaharini Kali Puja is specially important in the life Sri Ramakrishna and Sri Sarada Devi, since on this day in 1872 Sri Ramakrishna worshiped Sri Sarada Devi as Shodashi[12]. In many Bengali households, Kali is worshipped daily.[13] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kali_Puja
