Fair Trade will be celebrated on 12 May 2012, World Fair Trade Day, in diverse places and cultures across the globe. The World Fair Trade Day is an annual initiative of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO). Hundreds of events are organized in more than 70 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, North America and Pacific Rim. Leading the celebration are members of the WFTO that have pioneered Fair Trade for more than five decades, supported by country and regional networks.
World Fair Trade Day is a worldwide festival of events celebrating Fair Trade as a tangible contribution to the fight against poverty, climate change and the economic crisis that has the greatest impact on the world’s most vulnerable populations. A third of the world’s population lives on less than two dollars a day. The global crisis confirms the need for a fair and sustainable economy locally and globally. Trade must benefit the most vulnerable and deliver sustainable livelihoods by developing opportunities for small and disadvantaged producers. Millions of producers and traders, business and policy makers, supporting organizations and volunteers have contributed to the substantial growth of Fair Trade.

SELECT’s workers and their families receive free medical assistance and medication through our SAHEP programme. This programme also provides education and schooling for all of the workers’ children.

FIFA standard balls are hand-stitched in Pakistan for Fair Kick Soccer. In a size 5 ball, there are 690 stitches. As each of the five-sided pieces of polyurethane artificial leather are stitched to the others, the ball’s sphere gradually closes. The last stitches are done ‘blind’. That is, they use a pair of long needle-pullers, threading between stitches that they have already made, because they cannot get their hands inside the ball. The Arms Trade Treaty is the name of a potential multilateral treaty that would regulate the international trade in conventional weapons. The treaty will be negotiated at a global conference under the auspices of the United Nations from 2 – 27 July 2012 in New York. MORE
Campaign Against the Arms Trade
Campaign Against Arms Trade (CAAT) is a UK non-governmental organisation that campaigns against the international arms trade. It was set up in 1974 by a number of peace and other organisations who were concerned about the growth in the arms trade following the Middle East war of 1973. It is a broad coalition of groups and individuals in the UK working to end the international arms trade. CAAT claims that this trade has a negative effect on humans rights and security as well as on global, regional and local economic development. In seeking to end it CAAT’s priorities are to:
- end government subsidies and support for arms exports;
- end exports to oppressive regimes;
- end exports to countries involved in an armed conflict or region of tension;
- end exports to countries whose social welfare is threatened by military spending;
- support measures, both in the UK and internationally, which will regulate and reduce the arms trade and lead to its eventually end.

Background: The National Gallery regularly hosts evening events for arms dealers seeking to impress their clients with drinks and dinners in its lavish surroundings. Arms company Finmeccanica buys this privilege for only £30,000 a year.
In 2011 the world’s largest arms fair took place in London, bringing together authoritarian regimes and weapons manufacturers from around the world. The National Gallery hosted its evening reception. Unless we stop them, it looks like the gallery will again host arms dealers during this year’s Farnborough Airshow in July!

During 2005, the United States „provided nearly half of the weapons sold to militaries in the developing world, as major arms sales to the most unstable regions—many already engaged in conflict—grew to the highest level in eight years,“ according to a Congressional Research Service (CRS) report. [1] The United States „supplied $8.1 billion worth of weapons to developing countries,“ which was „45.8 percent of the total and far more than second-ranked Russia with 15 percent and Britain with a little more than 13 percent.“
„Arms control specialists said the figures underscore how the largely unchecked arms trade to the developing world has become a major staple of the American weapons industry, even though introducing many of the weapons risks fueling conflicts rather than aiding long-term US interests.“ [2]
„The United States, for instance, also signed an estimated $6.2 billion worth of new deals last year to sell attack helicopters, missiles, and other armaments to developing nations such as the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, India, Israel, Egypt, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia. Developing nations are designated as all those except in North America, Western Europe, Russia, Australia, and New Zealand.

…. 3. The 9 articles of the recent law passed by the Majlis and the 2 articles in the resolution adopted by the Supreme National Security Council contain useful and significant points which have to be observed. In addition, there are other points which with emphasis on numerous points mentioned in those two documents- have to be observed and which will be announced:
1st. Considering that acceptance of negotiations by the Islamic Republic was fundamentally based on the goal of ending the unjust economic and financial sanctions and that the implementation of this in the Bar-Jaam has been postponed to the time after Iran has implemented, it is imperative to receive strong and necessary guarantees in order to prevent contravention by the opposing parties. This specifically means written declarations by the American president and by the European Union regarding ending of sanctions. In the declarations by the EU and the American president it has to be clearly stated that these sanctions are completely lifted. Any mention of continued retention of the structure of sanctions is considered a breach of the Bar-Jaam.
2nd. Throughout the entire 8-year term, any new sanctions on any level with any excuse (for example with the repetitive fake excuses of support for terrorism or human rights) pursued by any of the opposing countries in the negotiations will be considered a breach of the Bar-Jaam and the government is obligated to take the necessary steps according to Article 3 of the Majlis law and stop the activities of the Bar-Jaam.
3rd. The actions related to the two following points will only happen when the Agency [IAEA] has announced the end of the file relating to the current and past issue of PMD.
4th. Any actions concerning the renovation of the Arak factory with maintenance of its heavy-water identity, will only begin when there is a firm and secure contract concerning the plan of substitution with necessary guarantees having been secured.
5th. Any negotiations concerning the transfer of enriched uranium in return for yellow cake with foreign governments will only begin when a reliable contract in this regard together with necessary guarantees has been secured. Negotiations and transfers have to be done gradually and in multiple steps.
6th. According to the Majlis law, any plans and preliminary matters necessary for the medium-term development of the nuclear energy industry which includes the development plan in various periods from now until 15 years and resulting in 190,000 SWU has to be carefully produced and considered by the Supreme National Security Council. This plan has to conclusively deal with all concerns derived from some of the points mentioned in the appendices of the Bar-Jaam.
7th. The Atomic Organization has to research and develop on various levels in such a way that in the time of implementation at the end of the 8-year term, there will be no technical deficiencies for enrichment technology which will occur in compliance with the Bar-Jaam.
8th. Attention should be paid to the fact that in the ambiguities of the Bar-Jaam document, the interpretations of the opposing side are not acceptable and what is authoritative is the text of the negotiations.
9th. The existence of convolution and ambiguity in the text of the Bar-Jaam, the possibility of breach of promises as well as violation and deception from the opposing side- particularly America- makes it necessary to establish a strong, well-informed and intelligent group to monitor the development of matters and the implementation of promises from the opposing side as well as the realization of the matters stated above. The composition and duties of this group shall be determined and resolved in the Supreme National Security Council.
Considering what has been stated and with observance of the reminded matters, the resolution of meeting 634 of the Supreme National Security Council dated 94/5/19 is confirmed.

The Soil Association’s Conference 2012 will celebrate innovation in food and farming today. We will explore this through the two major themes of our strategy: Facing the Future, which explores the exciting scientific and technical progress being made in organic and low-input farming systems; and Good Food for All, which contributes to the important debate about food, public health and social justice.
The future of our food is in flux. According to the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture (UNFAO) special Rapporteur, Olivier de Schutter http://www.srfood.org/, ‘keeping blindly on the track of industrial agriculture is clearly unsustainable.’ If this is the case, then we need to galvanize the finest thinkers, technologists, scientists, farmers, entrepreneurs and teachers to develop new and sustainable ways of feeding a growing world population now and in the future.
In addition, the growing challenge of diet-related ill-health, in the UK and internationally, means that we need to explore the relationship between food production and its consumption. With a world that has approximately 1 billion people malnourished and 1 billion obese, there is a powerful case for bringing public health and nutritional expertise to the farming and food production table, to innovate joined-up solutions for our food future.

Navdanya is a network of seed keepers and organic producers spread across 16 states in India.
Navdanya has helped set up 65 community seed banks across the country, trained over 5,00,000 farmers in seed sovereignty, food sovereignty and sustainable agriculture over the past two decades, and helped setup the largest direct marketing, fair trade organic network in the country.
Navdanya has also set up a learning center, Bija Vidyapeeth (School of the Seed) on its biodiversity conservation and organic farm in Doon Valley, Uttarakhand, North India.
2011 marked Earth University/Bija Vidyapeeth’s 10 year anniversary. Located on Navdanya’s Biodiversity and Conservation Farm, Navdanya offers celebrated courses for students to partake in from all over the world.
