The dire situation in Syria, new wave of violence in Iraq, continuing violence in Egypt, Turkey, the “clampdown” on human rights defenders in Bahrain, Israel’s policy on forced evictions, impact on the individual’s right to privacy in UK and the USA, the protection of journalists were among the issues raised by UN Human Rights Chief Navi Pillay in her opening address.
Navi Pillay concluded by noting that it is not only important to act immediately on the current challenges, but it should be a priority to prevent future crises.
