Peaceful Protests Continue in Tibet, Chinese Police Raid Monasteries and Nunneries

Tibetans in eastern Tibet bolster their call for return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and freedom in Tibet, braving beatings and arrests by police

 

TIBET: On 19th June 2011, two nuns of Nyimo Getsul Nunnery, Jamtuk Dolma and Dolma Palmo, took to the street in Karze demanding the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and freedom in Tibet.

 

According to a monk from Sera Jey monastery in southern India, the two nuns were immediately arrested by the Chinese police after severe beating. There is no detailed information regarding their current whereabouts.

 

Jamtuk Dolma, daughter of Yama Phuntsok and Tashi Lhamo, is a native of Lhopa Township, Karze.

 

Dolma Palmo, 20, was from Lagang Village, Lhopa Township, Karze County and her parents passed away a long time ago.

 

Meanwhile, the Chinese government has stepped up restrictions in both lay and monastic communities.

 

The authorities have also ordered the monks and nuns in Kardze not to go out to the town without prior permission.

 

On 18th June, the Chinese authorities raided some of the monastic communities in Karze and also registered the mobile numbers and telephone numbers of many monks and nuns.

 

In another incident, a nun of Gaden Choeling Nunnery, Chunyi Lhamo, staged a peaceful protest in the main market of Karze County at 8 AM (Beijing Standard Time) on 20th June 2011.

 

During the protest, Chunyi Lhamo raised her hand drawn Tibetan national flag, and shouted slogans of „No Freedom in Tibet“, “ We want Freedom in Tibet “ and“ Long live of His Holiness the Dalai Lama“. Pamphlets calling for freedoms in Tibet were also distributed.

 

The Chinese police arrested her immediately and there is no further information regarding her whereabouts.

 

Chunyi Lhamo was born in 1982 in Yanang Village, Kadak Township, Karze County and her parents are Sonam Gyatso and Yeshi Wangmo.
